Did you know that September is Pain Awareness Month?
The IASP, and so are we, is dedicated to increasing public awareness about pain, its management, and the important contributions of pain professionals throughout September and beyond. As part of Pain Awareness Month, the goal is to delve into the complexities of pain, emphasize the need for improved data, and highlight pain research and its impact on people living with chronic pain.
Chronic pain in Europe is a significant public health issue, affecting quality of life and causing a substantial economic burden. According to ’Chronic pain in Europe: prevalence, impact on daily life, and treatment,’ published in the European Journal of Pain in 2006, which has provided foundational data on the subject, approximately 100 million Europeans suffer from chronic pain, representing about 20% of the adult population in Europe.
Pain Awareness Month is an annual global campaign to help spread awareness of issues related to pain and pain management. Each week in September, IASP will highlight a different area of pain to increase awareness:
- Week 1: Sex and Gender Disparities in Pain
- Week 2: Chronic Pain
- Week 3: Rare Conditions
- Week 4: Scientific Research and Assessment
