Reflections on the EFIC Pain School on Translational Pain Research in Krakow
The emotions have now settled a bit, and we are delighted to reflect on the recent 4th European Pain Federation Krakow Pain School on Translational Pain Research: From Lab to Clinic held in Krakow. The event was a tremendous success, characterized by a high scientific level and the active participation of wonderful lecturers. Both participants and faculty were extremely satisfied and impressed.
The program struck a perfect balance between clinical and preclinical science, offering provocative viewpoints and ideas that challenged both students and faculty alike. Profs. Barbara and Ryszard Przewłocki and Luis Villanueva created an incredibly interesting scientific program. For those seeking a detailed written account of the event we refer you to the quarterly BÓL magazine (published in Polish, https://ptbb.pl/bol ) for a full description. In accordance with the School’s tradition, we also provided invaluable experiences through hands-on workshops. Our team, along with the staff of the Department of Pain Pharmacology, conducted a workshop on „Pain Testing in Preclinical Studies.” After a brief introduction to the methods used in pain testing, presented in a lecture by Prof. Mika and heads of our department, Prof. Starowicz, participants engaged in practical sessions measuring pain behaviors in animals and were well introduced to human pain models and pain assessment. The hands-on exploration, along with discussions on psychological techniques related to pain, was a highly valuable experience for students, some of whom were from basic sciences and some from clinics, helping them better understand the issues of translation.
Katarzyna, who was Chair of the Organizing Committee, extends huge thanks to her colleagues for their involvement in the preparation and assistance each day of the EFIC Pain School. Magda and Kasia took excellent care of all participants, being kindly present at the registration desk, while Mateusz and Nicolo provided irreplaceable technical support. Your outstanding assistance in organizing the School was invaluable. Without you, this would not have been possible. Katarzyna extends special thanks once again to Kasia, Magda, Mateusz, and Nicolo!
Our team participated in this event not only as organizers but also, if not primarily, due to our interest in the topic of this meeting. Additionally, it was a place to gain new experience in presenting our scientific achievements and drawing inspiration from other scientists. Special congratulations to those who made their debut as poster presenters, including our master’s students Mateusz and Nicolo. Your hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, and we are proud to see you representing our group.
Many thanks to everyone who participated and contributed to making this event a memorable one. We hope to see you all again soon!
